Gateavisa Issue “197”
Art direction and design of issue “197” for Gateavisa (meaning Street News), Norway’s first modern radical countercultural magazine. The first issue was published from an anarchist collective in Oslo in 1970, and has since then been Norway’s only wide reaching publication rooted in anarchism.
Rather than adjusting to the commercial newsstand we wanted to reflect their anarchist past and make the newsstand adjust to Gateavisa. The cover referring to “Steal This Book” by Abbie Hoffman much like Gateavisa, written to guide the youth toward fighting the government and corporations.
Gateavisa’s logo placed at the bottom of the cover, resulting in the publication having to be put in front of shelves to be readable. Encouraging the viewer to steal from the newsstand whilst challenging their personal values in the spirit of the magazine. It was highlighted by warnings and put in eye sight to be monitored by employees, yet very visible for the customer.
